Class Activities Term 2 | Year 9-10

Unit 2: Social Networking

40 Periods: 10 Weeks

Outcomes: 5.1 - 5.10

Raw Marks: 100%

Weighting: 25%

Unit Focus:

The idea is to use Performance art as a platform for artist commentary and student awareness of internet safety. The idea came from students from my class constantly warning and asking students to put away cell phones to focus on class activities. Instead, I embraced technology used in a appropriate manner within school boundaries allows me to challenge and create an awareness of cyber predators and strangers. Also making Internet, technology in general, especially in the form of communication used in the correct manner can be an enjoyable experience. The idea is to create an awareness using Performance art in video as the platform of discussion.

Students will make a comment on "Social Networking" looking at all of the pros and cons. Planning, researching, investigating and sourcing are all valuable skills Artist use when beginning their design briefs.

Week 1 - 3

What to study for week 6?

The aim of the examination, whether they have or have not studied particular artists throughout the year, is to allow students to use their critical mind to formulate their own opinions through their interpretive writings.

What is Performance art?

The artist is part of the work the action of creating is important, it is presented to the audience. Performance art may be either scripted or unscripted, random or carefully orchestrated; spontaneous or otherwise carefully planned with or without audience participation. The performance can be live or via media; the performer can be present or absent. It can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body, or presence in a medium, and a relationship between performer and audience. Performance art can happen anywhere, in any venue or setting and for any length of time. The actions of an individual or a group at a particular place and in a particular time constitute the work.

Students looked at Jill Orr as an example of performance art:

Class Activities:

Answer the questions below using the YouTube videos to influence your comments

  • How is performance art closer to the real world than painting on a wall or canvas?

  • Some performance art works lasts only for a short time. How is this different from more traditional forms of art?

  • What issues does a Performance artist take on?

  • Taking the issue of social networking create a group performance work. Document the piece with photographs or video and post it on a Facebook page created to spread the comments or the messages then create your own art work concerned with other issues of social networking. Consider making it an installation or performance piece.

    • How do we start?

Week 6 | Exams - Documents

What to study?

The aim of the examination, whether they have or have not studied particular artists throughout the year, is to allow students to use their critical mind to formulate their own opinions through their interpretive writings.

The ideas of the individual artists are important because interpretation of an artwork may be overly critically evaluated by outside opinions. We will teach students to critically evaluate and consider other world views and historical events. And to pull apart sources of information presented in theoretical art books or on the Internet. For example, reading an art critic’s editorial or an art curator’s column.

This will allow and encourage students to:

  • write in a concise and a well reasoned way

  • present an informed point of view

  • use plates and other sources and materials to provide the best answers

Concepts, ideas...

don't come by sitting there expecting to be filled with ideas but collecting and researching, sourcing out other ideas and filling yourself with these ideas to create, re-contextualize and appropriate new ones.

Upcoming Icebook performances:

1st, 2nd and 3rd of June as part of Toy Theatre Festival in Harderwijk, Netherlands. For times and location please visit: papiertheaterfestival.nl/Festival-2011/Theatres.html

The Ice Book is a miniature theatre show made of paper and light. An exquisite experience of fragile paper cutouts and video projections that sweep you right into the heart of a fantasy world. It is an intimate and immersive experience of animation, book art and performance.

We created the show during a four month artist residency at the Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen in Germany. All we had was a 5D Mark ii, an old Macbook with After Effects, some builders lights and a green cloth that we improvised as a makeshift green-screen. Before we started we had no idea how to make pop-up books let alone how we could combine them with projections. With a lot of care, love and arguing the idea eventually came to life.

The Icebook is available for touring. If you would like to host the show please don't hesitate to get in touch with us info@theicebook.com.

For information on touring dates in 2011 please check the website: theicebook.com

Thanks.
